Northwood's Inn was part of my childhood. I remember going for the first time as a young girl in the early 70's. My grandpa would hold me up to touch the snow on the roof. I loved the whole atmosphere and the food. Oh, the food! Steak Sandwich Open Face, rice, cabbage salad, cheese bread and the steak sauce. There's nothing better. I was in SoCal a year ago with my family and my brother and sister in law. I took my brother to Northwood's Inn for his 50th birthday. I don't think I'll ever come to Covina and not eat at Northwood's Inn!!!

The first time I was introduced to Northwoods Inn was back in 1980. A friend of mine, "Big Dave" Brandt, was attending Funeral Directors School. Big Dave and his fiancee Jenny took myself and friends Rocky and Evelyn there. WOW! As soon as I walked in the door, I knew I was in heaven. In the piano bar we went. Cocktail after cocktail, until our table was ready. Once at our table, and the apetisers came a coming, things only got better. The cabbage salad I talk about frequently to this day. Thereafter, I would make several trips with friends, flying down one day, getting a hotel, take a limo to the restaurant, pary and eat until we were swelt, take the limo back to the hotel, get up in the morning to fly back to Camano Island, Washington. Those were the days! Big Dave and I spoke just the other day about a few of us getting together and flying down again for dinner. After seeing your website, I think we need to make this happen real soon.

Does anyone remember where the exact location of the Belmont Shore Clearmans was located?

My wife and I have been going to North Woods Inn's for almost 40 years. Living in Long Beach we always drove to the restaurant on Rosemead since it was the closest one. You can imagine how thrilled we were when our North Woods Inn opened in Belmont Shore here in Long Beach. Then sadly it closed some years later. No problem though. Now we go to the North Woods in La Mirada. Very Nice ! I think for us, it's always been the salads and bread.

Northwoods was always a very special place for my family. We would go there just for a nice family dinner and always if we had a special celebration. It has been a very long time since I have been able to visit but I do remember our favorite waitress "Ms. Dianne" and I remember the waiter that would stack up the water glasses and walk around with them. A lot of great memories and great food. I wish I could have some now.

I have been going to the North Woods since I was a small child. I am now retirement age and still love the smell, taste and atmosphere of this fantastic steak house. The salads are to die for and the cheese toast, need I say more. The steaks are scrumptious and nowhere else can you get a baked potato the size they have here. We moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma several years ago and crave the North Woods all the time.

As a young girl in the 60's, my parents used to take their Italian club there for dinner - i especially remember the cabbage salad and cheese bread - nothing like it anywhere else! Good memories from this restaurant. I live on the west side of L.A. now, so don't get out there much. But looking at the menu again makes me want to make a special trip out to San Gabriel to indulge!

In the mid to late sixties my girlfriends and I use to frequent the North Woods Inn. It was our favorite place to gather and enjoy time after work. I in Oklahoma now but every visit home I love to return to my favorite restaurant. In fact I was just talking to one of those friends this morning making plans to meet their with our spouses for my visit there next week 9-18-09. I know that we will experience the same quality of food and service that we have in the past and I am so excited!! We were also talking about how the restaurants of today such as Applebees,Olive Garden,Outback do not have that special feeling and uniqueness that the restaurants of years past had. That is the one things about Southern California that I remember so well and that was all of the really neat places to eat and most of them are gone now. Although the surroundings have changed a little I do so appreciate the fact that North Wood Inn still stands and remains open. It will be a very sad day for my friends and I if the doors ever have to close on this very special place. Thanks for the memories. Roma Dewey

While living in California NorthWood Inn was a place I loved. We have since moved to Idaho and well my friend gave me a huge red cabbage and since yesterday I have been craving the bread and salad. I will try some kind of recipe but will not be the same. Will have to visit when I return.

My mother was a single mom with 4 beautiful daughters and at a very young ages she introduced us to Northwoods. We use to go to the one on Rosemead Blvd. the most and it was always enjoyable. As we have all grown up I now live in South O.C. and frequent the one in La Mirada. I can honestly say my favorite place to eat is Northwoods. I traveled with work for 2 years on the East Coast and tried many a lobster but no one makes lobster tails like Northwoods and especially with that delicious stuffing in the tail. I have introduced Northwoods to my 2 children and when ever I am out by Northwoods I will stop and pick up the cabbage slaw & cheese bread to go.....Yup! It's my absolute favorite place to eat. Thanks for all the wonderful food and memories.

My parents have been eating at this restaurant since before they were married and they've been married 38 years now. I am 37 and I have loved this place for as long as I can remember. The atmosphere is rugged, but yet sophisticated. I love that you can throw the peanut shells on the floor. I love the food server garb. I The cheese bread and salads are the best ever!! The food has always been good, hence why the family has been going there for almost 40 years!!

My family has been going to North Woods Inn since I was about 5 years old. Now, I have been taking my family and friends now and it's getting harder since we live in Wyoming. We are three generations strong eating there every chance we get while we visit SoCal.

I have always loved this restaurant But our vist Friday night was very dissappointing. We ordered all the Cheesebread and salads plus 2 cokes and the bill was over $20! Our waiter never refilled either the cheesebread or the salad was went past us so fast we could't get his attention. We left wondering if we should ever come back! Barb Johnson

During a visit to Northwoods, my 2 year old niece became frightened of the moose and bear heads mounted on the walls. My brother did the cutest thing in response. He went up to each animal head, pointed at them and gave them a stern talking to. He came back to the table and announced, "They will NOT be bothering us!" We went on to have a VERY delicious family dinner.

My Father, George W. McKinster waited tables throughout the late eighties - early ninties and ended up managing at the La Mirada location. He's sick now, and I would like to get in touch with all of our old friends. Please email me as soon as you can. erik.mckinster@us.army.mil

I live in Maryland now and just flew in to see my folk. My brother picked us up, smiled and said Northwood? My wife and daughters replied yes before I could. It's funny how it can be there favorite never living there. The great salads and bread always makes me think of wonderful old memories, while watching my girls create their new ones. Four visits in 16 days. We Love You and Thanks.

My dad used to save all year to take our family to NWI every Christmas Eve....we would be allowed to order whatever we wanted...I always ordered the 'steak on a skewer', my older brother ordered the hamburger so he could also have the hot fudge sunday for dessert....my mom would always have us open our "Christmas outfits" on Christmas Eve so we would all be dressed up for dinner!! I was, and still am, in love with both the salads and cheesebread...I am 66yrs old and it is still my all time favorite place to eat....actually, we are going there this wknd to celebrate my retirement...will be meeting family members there....I live in Arizona but still consider NWI my favorite and request it for 'special occasions'.....

Have been going to the North Woods since the early seventies, first on Rosemead Blvd and then on to Covina. The food is still as great as ever, sadly, the last time I was over on Rosemead Blvd I was shocked to see how the Kohls has ruined the beautiful look of the Northwoods over that way.

I haven't eaten here since I was a little girl in the 60s! My father took us here for special occasions. My little brothers loved the sawdust floor and eating peanuts. I got to have a Shirley Temple drink before my steak dinner. Now that I live here again, I'll take my husband!

I took my family there for lunch, as usual the food was fantastic and service was great. Unfortunitly the prices have risen, our visits to Northwoods will have to be curtailed for a while.

The North Woods Inn was my parents' favorite restaurant. I was absolutely dazzled when they first took me. Watching the baked potatoes being dressed is the most vivid memory. I also remember the R-rated Santa's Helper outfits the cocktail waitresses wore. Years later, after I'd moved to New York, I was out on business and took a friend to the Clearman's Gay 90's-themed restaurant on Rosemead. Since it was a 40s steakhouse, I decided to have a 40s cocktail. I've become a single-malt scotch whisky snob but was always curious about the Rob Roy. I ordered one, and, gulp................I liked it.

My mom's family grew up going to northwood's ever since they opened in the 50's. Around the time when they moved to El Monte. I grew up going to Northwood's all my life while i was living in El Monte now im in Chino Hills. I still remember the village, golden cock restaurant and original galley there. Gosh i wish it was still there!Especially during xmas when it would be covered in xmas lights! But atleast Northwood's is still there and all the food and the service is fantastic!!!!! It will always be one of my favorite restaurants of all time!!!!

I lived in Covina and my boyfriend, Chris Woller was one of the best waiters. He passed away a few years ago. He worked for Clearmans's for over 20 years. He never got tired of the food. He would bring home the cabbage salad and cheese bread and we would sit in front of the T.V. and eat away! I don't live close anymore and they closed the Long Beach location, I miss it so much I could cry.

My parents used to take me there when I was a kid on their anniversary and christmas eve. I got to have the lobster and the salads were so great. The cheese spread however is beyond words and I really wish they would ship it across the U.S. I'd buy cases of it! I really miss not being able to go but on trips back to California, it's always on my list of "to do".

My dad took us to North Woods Inn for Christmas Eve too! It was a family tradition for many years. We would have a wonderful, exciting Christmas Eve dinner and then go home to open one Christmas Eve present. When my sister and I became teenagers, we began the new family tradition of opening all our presents on Christmas Eve. But we always had dinner at the NWI, until the family eventually scattered all over the country. None of us live in the neighborhood now, and haven't for decades. I've travelled and lived all over the country but I never forgot the North Woods Inn, and I'm happy to say I was able to take my mom to lunch there after at least thirty years since her last visit. The North Woods Inn is like a fabulous, beautiful time capsule. Like I said, I've been everywhere, and I would rather dine at the North Woods Inn than most of the Manhattan joints I know. I'm happy to learn that the NWI is still making Christmas memories for little ones. The "snow" on the roof of the North Woods Inn was the first snow I ever saw as a SoCal kid, and I've never forgotten it. Thank you for a wonderful family restaraunt.

I have been going to the North Woods Inn sense I was a little girl. Some of my fondest memories was going with my grandma and mom. Three generations of Keithley women! I used to order a Shirley Temple. I have been in love with the salads and cheese bread sense I can remember. My grandma used to get the paino player to play "You Are My Sunshine." Then we graduated to "Alley Cat." I still get to go now then. It's one of my all time favorite places to dine.
